Improvisation & Movement Awareness

Improvisational dance is the art of choreographing in real time. This creative movement practice emphasizes personal expression, close attention to the group dynamic, and rigorous curiosity.
In an improvisation class, students do not learn specific "steps," but instead seize the opportunity to make a variety of movement choices and take risks. If you are an experienced mover, improvisation will add new dimension to existing technique. If this is your first dance experience, improvisation will help build self confidence, develop body awareness, and cultivate a genuine appreciation for movement in all its forms. Improvisation allows for movers of all levels to experience moving from the inside out. Each class will focus on a new skill or concept, including improvisational methods, rhythm, pacing, gestures, storytelling, props, and musicality.

Classes with Michelle

 Michelle's classes take place at a variety of studios in the DC metropolitan area including Joy of Motion Dance Center DC locations, Simon Says Yoga Studio. Michelle also offers private sessions and personal coaching options.



​Intro to Dance with Michelle Ava

Learn the fundamentals in ballet, modern and jazz dance. This class is designed for students new to dance. Learn the positions of the feet and arms, as well as establish proper alignment and turnout. Students will also learn basic dance vocabulary. This is a great introduction to dance for those who want to learn or review the fundamentals of dance technique, or for students transitioning from other of types of movement studies.

Modern Dance: beginner - advanced beginner / low  intermediate levels

Michelle's Modern Dance class emphasizes freedom of motion as well as building a strong technical foundation for the new and beginner and low intermediate level dancer.  Improvisational processes, floor and standing alignment work for centering and grounding is a primary focus. Accompanied by a variety of contemporary and world music, this class also focuses on the breath (inhale/exhale), which brings quality to one's movement. Concepts of overcurve/undercurve, releasing into the movement, contraction/release, musicality and rhythm are explored. Michelle incorporates an eclectic blend of contemporary and post-modern movement into her classes.
~ Levels ~
Beginner: For those with little or no background in Modern dance.  Class will be taught to accommodate students personal level of experience.
Low Intermediate: For students with at least one year of training in one or more disciplines.  Emphasizes greater development of technique.

Stretch and Flow
Designed and Facilitated by Michelle Ava.  A mid-morning, mid-week stress buster!  Align, Balance, Center; the ABC's of movement.  "Feel at Home in Your Body" in this gentle restorative class combining the posture enhancement of yoga with flowing motion and breathing/relaxation techniques.  Set to a variety of relaxing music, this is a perfect way to let go, unwind, and connect deep into your core.  Loose and limber, you leave rejuvenated, refreshed, centered, calm and ready for the day!  What students say: "After Michelle's Stretch and Alignment I feel taller, more opened, agile and relaxed.  I am more connected to my body, thoughts are clearer.  I have a general feeling of well-being."  "I love Michelle's personal corrections and adjustments...she seems to have a keen way of tuning into where students are holding tension and encourages us to let go!"

Improvisation:  The Free Association Way

A movement/theatre ImProV class reviving the techniques of the iconic 1970's experimental Free Association improvisation company.  Each week, we focus on a specific theme including voice and movement, working with props, creating on-site environmental works, group dynamics, contact, costume, and community.  Learn to use your intuition to make choices, become spontaneous in the moment, choose differently to make a difference, and take risks and unfold creatively.  ImProV is being totally present, and, as in life, sometimes it clicks and flows and sometimes it is bumpy and rough...ImProV helps us to learn to be in life more fully and to find creative solutions to everyday challenges.  Be Here NOW...ImProV!!
